Meet Kage, our very first release of our Hōjicha, a tea that deserves far more attention than it gets.

Kage (影) translates to shadow, a tribute to Hōjicha’s quieter, warmer personality. While matcha stands in the spotlight, Hōjicha has always been the underdog: comforting, roasted, grounding. Don't underestimate the underdog, it might just become your favourite!  This medium-roast version is crafted from tea leaves gently fired to bring out caramel notes, toasted warmth, and a naturally low-caffeine profile.

Sourced from a farmer known for perfecting balance in roast levels, Kage is smooth, nutty, and incredibly versatile — delicious on its own or as a latte. Our Hōjicha is from the Wazuka area in Japan.

On the palate, Kage delivers mellow roasted notes layered with subtle sweetness and a soft caramel finish.

Ingredients: 60g Hōjicha

Region and Farm

During our first trip to Japan, this was the last farmer we spent time with, and yet our first release. This beautiful family farm is located in the Wazuka prefecture, and has been passed down through 5 generations. The farm is small, yet a powerful family team who cares immensely about maintaining the traditional, high quality practices of Hōjicha farming.

Tasting Profile

This Hōjicha has a rich, nutty, and slightly smoky taste with a caramel finish.

How to prepare

Hot Latte
1. Measure 4 g of Hōjicha into a sifter and sift it into your whisking bowl. This prevents clumps and gives you that silky finish.
2. Soak your bamboo whisk for 30–60 seconds to soften the tines — it protects the whisk and creates better foam.
3. Add a splash of hot water (just enough to cover the Hōjicha).
4. Whisk in a quick zig-zag motion until the Matcha turns smooth and frothy.
5. Add the rest of the hot water or warmed milk and whisk gently to combine.
6. Pour into your cup, top with warm milk, and enjoy your creamy hot latte.

Iced latte
1. Measure 2–4 g of Matcha and sift it into your whisking bowl to keep it lump-free (especially important for iced drinks).
2. Soak your bamboo whisk briefly to soften it — even for cold Matcha, it makes a difference.
3. Add a small amount of water (cold or room temp works best here).
4. Whisk in a fast zig-zag motion until the Hōjicha is fully dissolved and frothy.
5. Fill a glass with ice, pour in the milk, and then add your Hōjicha concentrate.
6. Stir, sip, and enjoy! Iced lattes are great for highlighting the more sweeter notes in the Hōjicha. Also pairs well with cinnamon, and even coffee!

Storing information

Although Hōjicha isn’t as sensitive as Matcha, we still recommend following good storage to preserve the subtle tastes.

  • Store in an airtight container
  • Keep it cool and dark: Store in the refrigerator or a cool, dark cupboard away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Avoid moisture: Make sure the container is completely dry and keep it away from humid environments.
  • Use within 2-4 months of opening: Once opened, Hōjicha lasts abut 3-4 months.
  • Before opening: Unopened Hōjicha can be stored in the freezer for extended freshness — just let it come to room temperature before opening to prevent condensation.

Absolutely love it! Definitely has some nutty & caramel notes. I’ve enjoyed it as both a hot and an iced drink😍

First time finding good Hojicha in South Africa. Definitely worth the price if you want quality stuff.

The details that make the difference

Over 80%

of matcha is fake

Most global "matcha" is actually fake matcha grown outside of Japan and skip the slow traditional methods.

* Our matcha is from Japan and is organic.

3rd harvest

is most of the matcha

Most matcha globally is from 2nd and 3rd harvest. These older leaves are highly astringent and bitter.

* Our matcha is 1st harvest - young leaves means more sweetness, less astringency.

5+ middlemen

between you and the farmer

Agencies and factories that sit between the farmers and your matcha dilute the quality and disregard farmer community support.

* We visit our farmers in person and buy directly from them.
